Clothing and equipmentThis section is to help make your walking experience as comfortable and safe as possible. It is not essential to follow all the advice here, but failing to do so will begin to compromise your comfort. A recommended list of what to bring will be sent to you with your booking confirmation email. Boots - these are an essential item of equipment. The walks will inevitably cover some rough and/or wet ground, and a good pair of boots will keep your feet dry and minimise the risk of a slip or ankle twist. Having said this, it is not essential to have a very expensive pair of boots; a reasonably comfortable and waterproof pair of boots can easily be bought for under £50. Popular and widespread stockists are Millets and Blacks (See Other links). It is a good idea to spend some time wearing new boots before coming on your holiday to ensure they are comfortable. Waterproofs - at Daleswalk we will not set off across a large stretch of open moorland if it is raining heavily. However, given the vagaries of the English weather, a waterproof jacket is essential. Again Millets and Blacks are good stockists, and these can be bought for around £30. Though not absolutely essential, a pair of waterproof overtrousers are a useful addition. General clothingThis is not a fashion column! You should bring at least one large warm jumper or fleece jacket with you. Jeans are not very comfortable to wear for walking (particularly if they get wet). For our walks a pair of cheap synthetic tracksuit bottoms are generally fine. |
